Thor kinda breaks my heart in this scene. His brother is about to use him to “test if gods are immortal”, and he just stands there in stunned silence. He doesn’t threaten Loki or try to reason with him. But he does cry. (it’s hard to tell from the blurry cam gifs)

Everyone always focuses on leaky Loki and him being the one to be shedding the lone manly tear in the scenes like this (with good reason, of course), but I don’t think we’ve ever seen Thor as lost or as resigned as he is here.

He’s not pleading or shouting or raging, he’s just silently accepting the fact that his brother has succumbed so completely to whatever madness the Tesseract and Thanos have inflicted on him.

I think it also has a lot to do with the fact that he blames himself for what’s happened to his brother. Because, all things considered, a great deal of Loki’s anger and sense of betrayal stems from him.

So this moment is him deciding to allow Loki to have this. To have a victory over the mighty Thor. To step out of the shadows once and for all, regardless of whether or not the cost may be his own life.

STOP BREAKING MY HEART

I’ve already talked about this, but well, it’s on my dash and I can’t ignore it.

I think, besides Frigga, Thor is the only one who truly loves Loki no matter what. He doesn’t try to imprison him, he doesn’t try to kill him. He just wants to bring him home. To set everything right. He could have easily taken him out when he took Loki from the plane, but he didn’t. He tried to reason with him instead. He doesn’t want to hurt Loki. He sees that Loki is hurt enough as it is, and just wants to show him love. But it’s too late for that, and that’s not really his fault. I can just imagine their childhood, where Thor would drag Loki on adventures he didn’t really want to go on just to include him, to show him he loved him, that he doesn’t care not many others think he’s weird or creepy or whatever. So of course he cries. He cries because he hates seeing his brother act this way, whether it’s because he’s being controlled, or of his own accord. He cries because, well, his brother is about to turn him into an Asgardian dropbear from 30,000 feet. He cries because he know he’s still going to try to just bring his little brother home instead of kill him, hurt him.

He tried to be a good brother, but he never too into consideration Loki’s needs, Loki’s feelings. He knows that, and he regrets that, because he does really love Loki as a brother, as family. He still calls him brother, still says ‘our father,’ even defends him when he kills eighty people.

Thor’s character is so complex, and he’s usually just taken as “Verily, big booming statements!’ There’s so much more to him, so much deeply intertwined with Loki’s emotions and actions. He knows his brother, knows he can be better, and it hurts him so much, he sheds tears, when Loki has fallen to his lowest.

Just seeing this scene like this, having not seen the movie in two weeks now… It’s just… Wow, it just gives me a ridiculous amount of feelings, and I don’t think I will express them properly. But Steve cares, and finally sees, and just like earlier in the movie, when Tony asks Steve to be their captain and take the decisions, this is the - much more dramatic - realisation from Steve that Tony is so much more than the man in the suit of armor, it’s Tony’s heart, right there. It’s also, probably, the start of a stronger relationship based on trust and faith.

You ship or you don’t, it’s not the point, but the story of Tony Stark and Steve Rogers, is so SO important, and relevant to whatever will come next. I know people who have just seen the movie can not understand what it means and are even aggressive about it, and I know that the highlight was on Tony and Bruce becoming best buddies (which is brilliant too) but there is something IMPORTANT and deeper between Tony and Steve, something that couldn’t happen in one movie, and it starts there, and will hopefully blossom in the next Marvel ventures.

#i’m fifty percent certain loki has realized that getting back to asgard means a chance to get his hands on the infinity gauntlet #and then deliver it to thanos #because thanos is not someone you want to fuck with whether you’re immortal or not #and i’m ninety-nine percent certain loki was tortured/stockholmed at his hands #in addition to having fallen through the void and been caught between the realms #at this point he was at his clearest and furthest out from under thanos and the influence of the tesseract #he doesn’t look defeated but he does look tired#i’m hoping to god that thor will find out about thanos and beg/do whatever he needs to in order to convince loki that he’ll help him #because tom’s gagging for a redemption arc and that might just be the way to make it happen #thanos gets the infinity gauntlet but loki flees because he’s now scared shitless after the first bargain went awry #(”the other” did say that thanos would hunt him down if he didn’t follow through)
